Future Earth is an international scientific programme formally proposed at the 2012 United Nations General Assembly on Sustainable Development, integrating the original four major programs of international global environmental change research, and is a new comprehensive global change and sustainable development research programme that aims to progressively advance research in eight priority areas, four of which are relevant to the farmland ecosystems currently being carried out at Yucheng Station:1) the attribution and prevention of atmospheric, water and soil pollution and the popularization and enhancement of public awareness of environmental protection; 2) the impact of urbanization on the environment and sustainable social development, building healthy cities and harmonious societies and safeguarding human well-being; 3) the interrelationship between changes in the Asian monsoon and human activities in the context of global warming and its impact on water security; 4) food security, energy supply and conservation of natural ecosystems.
The Yucheng Station has a long history of research on food security and the efficient and sustainable use of resources, with a particular focus on food security, water security and ecological degradation, and the results of this research will contribute directly to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2012. The Yucheng Station will not only conduct in-depth research on the Chinese targets of international strategies, but also provide Chinese solutions and model cases for the global implementation of these international strategies.
